UPCOMING EVENTS

February 26, 2008 - Clergy Breakfast
On February 26 the Nashville Chapter will host a breakfast for clergy and religious leaders. Because seating will be somewhat limited, we will not be sending details to the entire e-mail Network until we see how many clergy reserve.  We have no event scheduled for Darwin Day (February 12), but our speaker will be discussing how both religion and science suffer when creation is taught as if it were science. The Rev. David Kidd, who taught anthropology before becoming a pastor, will speak about the problem and entertain discussion. If this interests you particularly, you may contact us for details or await the Network notice.

March 15-17, 2008 - Dr. James McCollum and Rev. Betty McCollum
The Chapter will host Dr. James McCollum and Rev. Betty McCollum, visiting from Arkansas, for several events. Betty McCollum will give the sermon at 11 at Greater Nashville Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 374 Hicks Road, Nashville (located in Bellevue). Her topic is called "When Dreams Collide," about the conflicts inherent in the differences in people's hopes and aspirations. She is a Unitarian minister. Jim McCollum will tell the children of his experiences as a fifth grader.  A modest lunch will be served shortly after noon. On Sunday, March 16, there will be a public meeting at 7 pm at this church, where Jim McCollum will tell of his experiences as a child on whom the monumental Supreme Court decision, McCollum v. Board of Education, was based. An optional potluck supper at 6 will precede the talk.  The public is invited to all these events. Contact us to confirm details.

On Monday, March 17, Vanderbilt's Center for the Study of Religion and Culture will host Dr. and Rev. McCollum from 7:30 to 9 am in Buttrick Hall 101 and hear about the McCollum case during its 60th anniversary. Coffee and pastries will be served 7:30 to 7:45. We have been able to expand the seating since this was first announced, but reservations are still requested by Vanderbilt and may come thru the Chapter. Our guests will go to Murfreesboro for lunch, and then Dr. McCollum will speak from 1 to 2 in Honors 6. The public is invited. We need media coverage for these events. Can you help?

March 26, 2008 - First Freedom First Rally
Nashville was chosen as one of many cities around the country to hold a First Freedom First rally. It will be held Wednesday, March 26, at Opry Mills Stadium Theater, from 4:30 to 6:30, with a film at 5. Admission is free. This is sponsored by the Interfaith Alliance and Americans United to help with the goal of one million signers of the FFF petition. You can help us get attendance, and if you cannot attend, you can sign online.

April 2008 - Business Meeting

May 2008 - Annual Meeting

Ongoing Events

A group of liberals meets most Thursday evenings to discuss politics and events starting at 6 pm - with others showing up later. The routine meeting place is the Flying Saucer restaurant/bar downtown near the Frist and Union Station. The group is a chapter of a national organization and is named "DrinkingLiberally.org." Feel free to drop in - or better yet, get on their e-mail notification list.

Another liberal group which started at a local church meets in homes (often in Bellevue, but also elsewhere) usually on the second Fridays. The event is a potluck and usually has a speaker or presentation. Another member needs to invite you. If interested, reply here, identify yourself, and tell in a couple sentences your interest in church-state issues.

If in the SW area of Nashville, tune in to WRFN-FM 98.9 from 3 to 4 pm Wednesdays for "Church and State Today." Streaming is at www.RadioFreeNashville.org. Also hear Liberadio on WRFN Tuesday evenings 6 to 8 pm and on Thursday mornings on WRVU-FM 91.1, Vanderbilt's station, from 8 to 10 am. We are looking for guests and helpers.

You may already realize that Darwin's 200th birthday will occur on February 12, 2009. Darwin Day Celebration is a nonprofit organization designed to promote an international celebration of Science and Humanity each year on or near February 12, as we proceed towards 2009. Darwin and the theory of evolution are being used as symbols of scientific progress, and the goal is to achieve a global celebration by 2009. Events are being registered on the web site. You are invited to visit the web site at www.darwinday.org. Consider joining many others in this constructive educational effort. Read about the 10,000 clergy who have signed the statement about evolution.
